About the asset

Al Nakhil was discovered in 2009 and brought on stream in 2014 with a single 26,000 barrel-a-day train. Ten years of production history sharpened the reservoir model considerably: the original development left the northern flank under-drained, and pressure support across the main compartment turned out to be weaker than the appraisal wells had suggested.

Phase II answers both problems at once. Twenty-four infill producers target the northern flank and the attic oil left above the original well spacing, while fourteen injectors restore reservoir pressure with treated produced water — which also solves the disposal problem the field would otherwise face as the water cut climbs past 60%.

Associated gas that Phase I flared is now compressed and sent 41 km to the Rish Dune plant, where it is treated and sold. That single change removes roughly 90% of the field's routine flaring and pays for the compression within four years at long-run gas prices.

Scope of work

  • Infill drilling on 380-metre spacing with rotary steerable systems
  • Second 20,000 bopd processing train and stabilisation column
  • Produced-water treatment and reinjection into the aquifer
  • Field gathering network extension — 62 km of flowlines
  • Gas-lift compression and associated-gas capture to Rish Dune
  • Camp expansion, 34 MW of on-site generation and site infrastructure
